Derby hero Josip Šarac: Dream farewell from Göppingen after a dramatic victory!
On June 6, 2025, the eagerly awaited derby between Frisch Auf Göppingen and TVB Stuttgart took place in the EWS Arena. The game ended with a narrow 28:27 win for Frisch Auf, which was an emotional event not only for the fans, but also for the player Josip Šarac, who said goodbye after four years in Göppingen and is now moving to MOL Tatabánya KC. In this crucial moment, Šarac showed his class and became a derby hero by scoring crucial goals that significantly influenced the outcome of the game.
The atmosphere in the arena was exuberant from the start, as the game opened with the fan favorites “Mit Herz und Hand” and “You’ll never walk alone”. Despite an initial dominance by Frisch Auf, who led 21:13 until the 35th minute, the game became increasingly exciting thanks to a tactical change by Jürgen Schweikardt from Stuttgart and impressive 15 saves from goalkeeper Miljan Vujovic from Stuttgart.
A star's farewell
Josip Šarac, born on February 24, 1998, has established himself as a key figure for Frisch Auf Göppingen after moving to the club from Slovenia in 2021. During his time in Göppingen, he scored 75 goals in 17 games in the EHF European League and led his team to the semi-finals, where they finished third. He had previously played successfully with RK Celje in Slovenia and won several national titles.
Šarac is valued not only for his sporting abilities but also for his human side. After the game, he and three other players, including Bart Ravensbergen, Tibor Ivanisevic and Andreas Flodman, were bid farewell. Ravensbergen moves to HSG Wetzlar, Ivanisevic to GWD Minden and Flodman returns to Sweden. What was tragic was that Flodman was injured before the game, which led to changes in the team.
Successes and international experience
Josip Šarac looks back on a successful career. He began his career with HRK Izviđač in his native Croatia before moving to RK Celje. There he won the Slovenian First League twice and the Slovenian Supercup once. He also attracted attention on the national team by winning a silver medal at the 2016 European Youth Championships and the 2019 Junior World Championships.
In 2020, he was part of the Croatian national team that won the silver medal at the European Championships. He most recently took part in the 2023 Men's World Cup and reached 9th place with his team. His experiences during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where Croatia also finished 9th, add to his impressive sports profile.
Josip Šarac's path now continues to Hungary, where he will play for MOL Tatabánya KC. His time at Frisch Auf Göppingen will remain in the memories of fans and his teammates for a long time.
