Promotion fever! These regional league teams are fighting for the 3rd league

In the 2024/25 season, the focus of interest will be on questions of promotion from the regional leagues to the 3rd league. A total of four teams will be promoted this season, including the champions of the three regional leagues West, Southwest and Bavaria, who will be promoted directly to the 3rd league. The championship and the associated promotion have already caused cheers and celebrations.

The championships have already been decided: The MSV Duisburg secured the title in the Regionalliga West and is celebrating its return to the 3rd league. They dominated the Regionalliga Südwest TSG Hoffenheim II with 23 wins and a goal difference of 86:33. It was crowned in Bavaria 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 became champions after an impressive derby win against the Würzburger Kickers.

The fight for last place

The last promotion place will be between TSV Havelse from the Regionalliga Nord and the 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig from the Northeast Regional League. The first leg ended 1-1, while the second leg on June 1, 2025 was decided in extra time with a clear 3-0 for Havelse.

Overall, it is clear that the reform efforts in the regional leagues cannot be stopped easily. An initiative launched by 17 of the 18 clubs in the Northeast Regional League is aiming for promotion reform under the motto “Promotion Reform 2025”. This initiative aims to ensure that all champions are promoted and calls for the regional leagues to be reduced to four seasons.

Looking back at the relegated teams

However, the season was not only characterized by promotions. After the 38th matchday, the relegated teams from the 3rd league have been determined: Unterhaching (25 points), the SV Sandhausen (35 points), Hannover 96 II (37 points) and Borussia Dortmund II (43 points) can no longer stay in the 3rd league.

Overall, the discussion about promotion regulations remains lively. The next step is to wait and see whether the reforms will actually be implemented and how they will affect the structure of the regional leagues.
