SCANDAL in the Züblin parking garage in Stuttgart: There is no progress!
In a development that is shaking the city of Stuttgart to its foundations, the Samaritans of the Züblin parking garage are facing a shocking turnaround! For over five years, passionate discussions have overshadowed the future of this iconic structure, and now the legendary parking garage, the heart of the old town, is in danger of becoming a symbol of failed planning! Because while those responsible juggle empty words, the urgently needed redesign falls by the wayside. Tagesschau reports that the city has decided on a neighborhood development concept since July 2022 to create a connection between the Leonhardsviertel and the city center - but without any progress since then!
The grim reality is: The Züblin parking garage, once a place full of possibilities, continues to be robbed of its purpose as a mere parking lot. The much-touted relocation of long-serving parking spaces at the Breuninger department store, which will soon be on the road, faces enormous challenges. Disastrous delays and a standstill of concepts are the order of the day! Since the promising engagement process in 2020 that produced countless brilliant ideas, the only progress is... exactly nothing!
Waiting for IBA’27 – A nightmare for Stuttgart’s citizens
The Züblin car park is currently set to become part of the International Building Exhibition 2027 (IBA’27), but the city administration is drawing attention to the fact that this project is in acute danger! Kessel TV reports that a “competition of ideas” was launched, with demands for community-oriented residential use, areas for meeting people and leisure time on the table. But the implementation was more than catastrophic!
The city is now planning an EU-wide tender for 2026 - but in view of the extensive economic challenges, the dream of a brilliant IBA project in the Züblin car park is increasingly becoming a painful illusion. The city administration has recognized the cold reality and warns that the award to an investor could only take place in 2028! Where was the drive, energy and determination for this unique project?
A disappointed IBA director in a state of shock
In an emotional statement, Andreas Hofer, the IBA director, expressed his disappointment about the stagnating progress, but at the same time spoke of new opportunities for future planning. Empty words while a generation of Stuttgart residents fear for their valued cultural site! Where are the passionate planners who are committed to improving visions and innovative solutions? How long will citizens have to wait for real answers?
Years ago, the city boasted about its bold plans and the possibilities of the IBA, which deals with social, economic and ecological issues, but the reality reads like something from a parallel universe! BMWSB reports that the IBA is subject to constant changes and has no fixed procedure. This led those responsible to resort to a network that raises more questions than it provides answers. Is this the future we dreamed of for Stuttgart?
With the decline of the Züblin parking garage as a central urban development project, things are looking bleak. An urgent call to the city administration is therefore urgently needed: let the visions become reality! The signs are clear and the people are making their voices heard. Either way – Stuttgart is waiting for a miracle!
