Roma family in Stuttgart: Life in the shadow of poverty and hope

A Roma family lives in Stuttgart and struggles with the challenges of poverty and social exclusion. The family of five, consisting of Gaspar (29), Kassandra (26), their newborn son Isaak and daughter Princesa, lives under difficult conditions. You live in a small apartment with only two rooms, severely limited by the lack of your own toilet and kitchen. This cramped living situation worries the parents, especially with regard to the health of their newborn child Isaak. When conditions in the apartment become unbearable, they seek refuge in the park, where they can momentarily leave the pressures of city life behind them. Gaspar and Kassandra attract the attention of passers-by with their striking clothing style, Gaspar in a patterned shirt and Kassandra in a floor-length skirt. Their everyday life reflects the visible poverty that many Roma families experience in Stuttgart, both in the Arnulf-Klett-Passage and in the castle garden. Stuttgarter Nachrichten reported.

The challenges the family faces are part of a larger problem affecting many Roma in Europe. Social exclusion and discrimination are common experiences. In order to meet these challenges, Diakonie Württemberg is committed to working together with the Stuttgart Community Foundation and the Association of German Sinti and Roma, Baden-Württemberg regional association, as part of the DiaRom project. The aim of this initiative is the integration of newly immigrated Roma families in Stuttgart.

Help for self-help

The DiaRom project specializes in facilitating access to support and education systems for Roma families. A central aspect is strengthening their rights and promoting social participation. These families receive valuable support through outreach social work, which is offered as low-threshold referral advice. Project staff are available to the Roma as contact persons and develop tailored offers that are tailored to the families' living situations.

The offer also includes workshops and exchange formats that are intended to raise awareness of and reduce antigypsyism. Educational offers are aimed at employees of social institutions and providers in order to promote a better understanding and reduction of prejudices. DiaRom is based on the networking of the various project sponsors and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the European Union through the European Social Fund Plus (ESF Plus). This support is crucial to giving Roma families in Stuttgart the integration opportunities they need to lead a better life, according to Diakonie Württemberg.
