Climate change threatens Stuttgart: Politicians call for courageous urban development!
In the current discussion about urban development in Stuttgart, various actors are critical of the planned measures and the associated effects on quality of life. Anja Troff-Schaffarzyk, a social democrat from Lower Saxony, has clearly distanced herself from the decisions of the SPD-led traffic light coalition. She advocates that the decisions significantly restrict access to urban planning “cream of the crop” of municipal housing development. According to contextwochenzeitung.de, it calls for socially and ecologically sustainable development of vacant areas.
Troff-Schaffarzyk advocates the creation of new neighborhoods that should not only contain affordable living space, but also urgently needed green spaces, cultural uses and good local amenities. Their comments reflect a growing awareness of the need for a comprehensive approach to urban planning that takes into account both social and environmental aspects.
Urban climate and temperature development
In his remarks, meteorologist Jürgen Baumüller addresses the alarming climatic developments in Stuttgart. He reports that the number of summer days above 25 degrees Celsius in Stuttgart has doubled since the 1980s, while the days with temperatures above 30 degrees have increased from ten to 30. According to Baumüller, these changes could lead to temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius being reached in Stuttgart in the middle to mid-century. Despite these warning findings, Baumüller's views are rarely heard in city and state politics.
Another player in this debate is Christian Jung, transport policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group in the Baden-Württemberg state parliament. He praised the future applicable paragraph 23 on track development and at the same time criticized the Greens and Cem Özdemir because they had allegedly hindered necessary changes to promote residential development, but without going into detail.
Urban development: Bold ideas for Stuttgart
As part of its urban development, the city of Stuttgart has developed a model that takes social, economic and ecological aspects into account. This mission statement was the result of collaboration between authorities, the local council and the public in 2024. Dr. Hermann-Lambert Oediger, a person responsible for urban development, emphasizes the importance of dealing more courageously with limited areas in order to overcome challenges such as the housing shortage and climate change. More information can be found in a press release from the city of Stuttgart.
Three planning teams have currently been selected from almost 20 applications in order to translate the objectives of the mission statement into concrete urban planning concepts. These teams are urbanista, Yellow Z + RAUMPOSITION and TELEINTERNETCAFE + TREIBHAUS Landschaftsarchitektur + c/o Zukunft + Buro Happold. In the second phase of the project, which has already begun, the teams in Stuttgart will collect information and explore different city districts. The first results are to be presented on July 1, 2025 in the StadtPalais, followed by public forums to discuss the designs.
Overall, the discussion about urban development in Stuttgart shows how complex and multi-layered the challenges are that need to be overcome. The dialogue between politicians, experts and the public will be crucial to how the city develops in the future.
