Track construction work starting tomorrow: light rail lines severely affected!
A series of track construction work is scheduled to begin in Stuttgart on May 29, 2025 and will last until June 1. These measures affect several light rail lines, including lines U5, U6, U7, U8, U12 and U15. During the work there will be a route closure between the Olgaeck and Bopser stops. Passengers must expect line interruptions, shortenings and diversions. What is particularly noteworthy is that the section between Weinsteige and Killesberg is not served. However, the U7 between Ruhbank and Olgaeck will serve all stops on the U15, which offers some relief. However, most journeys are canceled entirely, meaning travelers have to adjust their plans accordingly.
Buses from the UE line, which run between Schlossplatz and Bopser, will be used for replacement services. It is recommended to change to alternative transport at the Charlottenplatz stop. Buses 42, 43 and 44 are also available. These buses connect, among other places, Eugensplatz, Charlottenplatz, the main train station and the city library. Buses on line 44 will be in service for the first time from around 5:10 a.m., on Fridays from 4:49 a.m., and will run until around 12:05 a.m.
Changed departure times and closures
Important information also concerns the U5 line, where the first and last journeys have been canceled without replacement. Departure times at stops are also modified, which could cause additional confusion for passengers. Passengers are asked to inform themselves about the changes before traveling in order to take timetable adjustments into account in good time.
Construction work in the city also has a significant impact on the traffic situation. The tunnel in the Mühlenberger Markt area will be closed during the entire summer holiday period, which will also lead to restrictions on light rail traffic. Various replacement services have already been set up to offer passengers alternative options. This applies, for example, to lines 3, 7 and 13, where a replacement rail service has been set up between Stadionbrücke and Wallensteinstrasse. Line 17 will be completely canceled during this time. The tight timetables and frequent diversions not only lead to longer journey times, but also to dissatisfaction among passengers.
The same was true in Dortmund, where light rail traffic has been severely restricted since Monday and passengers are complaining about significant delays. Many travelers report that it takes them up to 50 minutes to cover a distance of almost 3 kilometers. Complaints about the inadequate signage led to DSW21 responding and setting up a replacement stop for the rail replacement service.
The ongoing construction work in Stuttgart and Dortmund clearly shows how important it is to provide passengers with comprehensive and timely information and to provide alternative transport routes. In addition to the need for infrastructural improvements, passenger satisfaction is a decisive factor for acceptance in public transport.
