Steppi turns 115: Honored with an artistic bobbin picture in the museum!

The Steinheim steppe elephant, affectionately known as “Steppi,” recently celebrated a remarkable milestone: its 115th birthday since its discovery in 1910. With its extraordinary age, Steppi is not only an important fossil for the region, but also a symbol of the connection between the past and present. The Murr/Steinheim home group of the German Böhmerwaldbund e.V. honored this anniversary with a special gift: an artistically crafted bobbin lace portrait of the steppe elephant.

The bobbin pattern, which was painstakingly created by hand, shows the characteristic shape of the steppe elephant and combines traditional craftsmanship with local ties. It was placed in the Prehistoric Man Museum in Steinheim, exactly opposite the skeleton of the famous elephant. The Urmensch-Museum Steinheim Support Association would like to thank the local group for this valuable gift, which underlines the continued importance of the prehistoric elephant for the people in the region. Visitors are cordially invited to view both the original and the bobbin picture in the museum to experience the fascination of steppi up close , reports the Marbacher Zeitung.

The importance of Steppi for the region

The steppe elephant is considered one of the most important fossils in the region. His discovery significantly shaped the understanding of the prehistoric fauna in Baden-Württemberg. With over 80,000 objects, the collection of the Baden-Württemberg Natural History Museum is one of the most important in the field of paleontology. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Rainer Schoch's collection includes not only fossils from Baden-Württemberg, but also important finds from all over the world. These include ancient mammal ancestors as well as numerous dinosaurs and amphibians from different geological eras , as the Natural History Museum reports.

The steppe elephant plays a role not only in science, but also in local heritage. Events and exhibitions promote interest in paleontology and increase awareness of local history. The lace effigy, made using a traditional craft, is a beautiful expression of this cultural heritage and ensures that the fascination with the prehistoric period will be passed on into the future , adds the support association of the Prehistoric Man Museum.

Overall, Steppi's anniversary shows how important it is to preserve and celebrate regional history. The steppe elephant remains not only a key symbol for the scientific community, but also a beloved piece of local cultural heritage.
