Aggressive attack on police officers: 31-year-old arrested at Stuttgart main station!

On Sunday morning, May 25, 2025, there was an incident at Stuttgart main station in which a 31-year-old man from Bulgaria attacked the federal police. At around 9 a.m. the man was noticed by his unusual behavior, which led to an identity check by the officers. During the check, the suspect failed to comply with police requests, so his identity could not initially be determined. The incident escalated when the man threw a half-filled coffee cup towards a federal police officer, who narrowly missed him, as reported by the Stuttgarter Nachrichten.

Not only did throwing the coffee cup constitute a provocation, but the man also actively resisted the control. He kicked the officers and massively insulted a federal police officer. In order to calm the situation, the emergency services had to restrain the man and handcuff him. Because of his aggressive behavior, he was then taken to a cell. The investigation into the physical attack on law enforcement officers was initiated immediately, and another patrol was requested to accompany the man to the federal police station for transfer, as Presseportal describes.

Background on violence against police officers

The incident in Stuttgart reflects a larger trend that has emerged in Germany in recent years. Discussion about violence against police officers has increased, and there has been a clear increase in acts of resistance since the mid-1990s. According to the Police Crime Statistics (PKS), a total of 38,109 acts of violence against police officers were registered in 2018, which underlines the urgency of the issue. The criminal law reform in 2017, which created the criminal offense of assaulting law enforcement officers, was also a direct response to the growing violence against the police, as explained on bpb.de.

The debate over the use of force by police officers is complex. While there is sometimes talk of “excesses of violence” or “police brutality,” there is a legitimate interest in distinguishing between the illegitimate use of force and the lawful use of coercion that is necessary in certain situations. It requires a clear legal basis, which is mainly anchored in the police laws of the states.

In order to reduce mistrust and risks, experts emphasize the importance of training and further training in the use of body cameras for the police. Transparent and external oversight of police violence is also crucial to protecting civil rights and increasing trust in the police.
