Inclusive swimming in Weinstadt: The W” opens doors for everyone!
In October 2025, the “Wellenbrecher” project will be launched in the new indoor swimming pool “Das W” in Weinstadt. This pioneering project, which was initiated by Sanja Schwegler, Sebastian Müller and Jonas Röhrig, aims to overcome barriers and actively promote inclusion. The offer is aimed at people with and without disabilities who can learn to swim together. This is an important step towards an inclusive society in which everyone has the opportunity to discover water as a space for movement. This is particularly supported by the unique opportunities for movement and participation in water, which are often limited on land, according to German Swimming Association.
The opening of the indoor swimming pool “Das W – Hallenbad Weinstadt” will take place on September 20, 2025 from 12 p.m. On this day, bathers have the chance to use the new location for leisure and sports free of charge. Visitors can look forward to a colorful supporting program that includes, among other things, food trucks and a children's program. A highlight of the opening day will be the distribution of free admission wristbands, which will be available at the box office from 12:15 p.m. The indoor swimming pool can be visited on this day in fixed time slots:
| time window | time |
|---|---|
| 1 | 12:30 - 2:00 p.m |
| 2 | 2:15 p.m. – 4:15 p.m |
| 3 | 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m |
| 4 | 6:45 p.m. – 8:45 p.m |
Swimming for a good cause
On Sunday, September 21, 2025, the indoor pool invites you to a charity swim, where entry is only 1 euro for two hours. The proceeds benefit the Weinstadt Community Foundation and thus support other social projects in the region. Swimming times are also organized in fixed time slots to enable optimal use of the new pool:
| time window | time |
|---|---|
| 1 | 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m |
| 2 | 10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m |
| 3 | 12:30 - 2:30 p.m |
| 4 | 2:45 p.m. – 4:45 p.m |
In addition, a special tour of the technology area will be offered on the opening day at 2:00 p.m., which will provide insights into the modern equipment of the new indoor swimming pool. Regular bathing operations begin on September 22, 2025 without a time slot, which allows visitors flexible use.
The Breakwater project is an important part of the effort to ensure that children and adults, regardless of physical or mental impairments, have the opportunity to learn to swim. Every child should be given the chance to move in the water and develop their skills. Unfortunately, there is not yet a nationwide offer of inclusive swimming courses, which is why initiatives such as “breakwaters” are of great importance.
The commitment of initiators, course leaders and trainers is crucial to breaking down barriers and promoting inclusion in swimming. Through awareness-raising and sensible support, the fears and insecurities that often hold trainers back can be overcome. This creates an environment where everyone can discover the joy of swimming, inspired by strong para-swimming role models who show that disability is not a barrier to exercise in the water.
