Brazen fraud: fake carpet representative steals jewelry from a senior citizen!
A brazen theft that shocked the eastern part of Ulm is the focus of investigations by the Ulm-Mitte police station. On Friday, a man aged around 45 to 50 visited a 95-year-old senior citizen after she had previously been contacted by telephone by a supposed employee of an oriental carpet store. The call announced a surprise visit from a carpet representative, which piqued the senior citizen's interest. According to zvw.de, the man posed as an employee of a carpet store and offered his services.
During his visit, the fraudster claimed to have to check the senior citizen's carpets for moths free of charge. He allegedly found moth nests and inspected the carpets and closets throughout the apartment. After the visit, the senior citizen was shocked to find that jewelry was missing from a box.
Response and investigations
When the elderly woman asked the man about the theft, he reacted “indignantly at the accusation” and left the apartment, according to the police report. A call to the real oriental carpet store quickly revealed that they do not send employees to customers to carry out moth checks. These situations have severely undermined the trust of many older people in service offerings. Nowadays, seniors are particularly often the target of fraudsters who take advantage of their need for help.
The police appeal to all citizens, especially relatives of the elderly, to be vigilant and report such incidents immediately. It is recommended that you report suspicious calls or visits directly to the police and never leave personal or valuable items behind without checking.
The investigation is ongoing and police are still looking for more information about this case. Possible witnesses are asked to contact the Ulm-Mitte police station. This scam sheds light on the problem of con artists in the region and the need to take appropriate protective measures to protect the elderly from such attacks.
