Rudersberg stands up: One year after the flood disaster!
One year after the devastating flood on June 2, 2024, the community of Rudersberg is facing the challenges of reconstruction. Flooded cellars, washed out streets and destroyed bridges shaped the picture of the catastrophe, which plunged many residents into existential hardship. 83-year-old Werner Diggelmann, for example, was struggling in his house when the floods came. Tragically, two pensioners drowned in their flooded cellars in Miedelsbach.
The damage from this heavy rain event amounts to more than 120 million euros and affects private households as well as businesses and municipal buildings. Butcher Werner Hinderer, the seventh generation to run his business, complains about millions in damage to his newly renovated butcher shop, but he doesn't give up. Despite the possibility of leaving, he wants to continue to be there for his community.
Community cohesion
A year after the disaster, residents have already done a lot of work. Much of the mud, broken glass and debris has been cleared and many businesses are currently operating in containers. Mayor Raimon Ahrens emphasizes that the traces of the night are still visible and sees the need to push forward with reconstruction. The crisis team from the police, fire brigade and district coordinates the operations and would like to thank all the helpers: volunteers, farmers, entrepreneurs and volunteers who actively supported them.
The municipality has already spent 1.2 million euros on clearing up rubbish after the disaster. Around 90% of residents have natural hazard insurance, although many household contents insurance policies do not cover flood damage. A new dam that was opened shortly before the flood led to the realization that Rudersberg cannot protect itself from extreme flood events, as Ahrens explains.
Further measures and outlook
The fear of future flood events remains a constant companion among citizens. To prevent further damage, Diggelmann covered his basement with concrete. Nevertheless, the will to set off remains intact. A street festival in Klaffenbach is intended to strengthen solidarity and encourage people, while the community continues to make calls for cooperation in order to overcome the tasks ahead together.
The measures to restore functionality in Rudersberg are far from complete. The citizens hope for positive developments and are determined to rebuild their community. Further information about the progress and the upcoming work can be found on the official website of the municipality of Rudersberg, where the huge selfless efforts of many citizens are also acknowledged. Information on the flood protection initiative is also available to ensure prevention measures for the future. Especially in times of crisis, it becomes clear how strong and resilient a community can be, and this is impressively proven in Rudersberg.
