Repair café in Strasburg: Together for a sustainable future!

The first repair café opened last weekend in the old community center in Strasburg. This is where people come together to repair broken items and thus contribute to conserving resources. Sabine Fitzner was one of the first visitors. She brought her damaged shopping basket with her, the handle of which was only hanging by a thread. She received support from five to six volunteers who brought the basket back into shape with wire.

Another item Fitzner brought in for inspection was her mother's walker. The experts Dieter Schröder and Heiner Wasserstrahl examined the device and carried out minor repairs. Unfortunately, it turned out that a defective brake lever could not be repaired and had to be replaced. Heiner Wasserjet was of the opinion that the repair café is not a professional workshop, but rather acts as an aid to self-help.

Diverse repair options

The Repair Café not only offers support for walkers, but also for a variety of other items. Visitors could bring clothing, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles or even toys to be repaired. The trained men's tailor Susanne Krause took care of a broken zipper and a sewing machine, while IT specialist Hagen Meutzner helped with problems with cell phones and computers.

Around twelve colleagues support the initiative, including electricians and woodworking specialists. Carolin Große from the association emphasized how important the exchange between visitors is and that the initiative not only promotes craft skills, but also strengthens social cohesion. The organizers wanted more visitors for the first afternoon, but are optimistic about the future.

Next dates in focus

The next Repair Café meeting will take place on July 18th and again on September 19th, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The initiators would like to encourage interested citizens to bring their broken items with them in order to find solutions together and promote the sustainable use of resources.

The planned repair café in Neustrelitz, which plans to open its doors at the end of September 2023, also pursues a similar goal. Preparatory meetings are scheduled to take place here on June 28, 2023. The goal is to bring together people who have the knowledge and skills to repair appliances, toys and clothing. The café should not only offer practical help, but also act as a meeting place for young and old to train craft skills and promote creative collaboration neustrelitz in transition.

Such initiatives make an active contribution to environmental protection and take sustainable living into account. Awareness of repairing everyday objects is becoming increasingly important and shows how social challenges can be tackled together.
