Voluntary rescuers: Faring jokes saved in front of mowing machines!

The Rehkitz Rescue Dessau association has successfully completed its second season. This year, between 8 and 18 June 2025, a total of eleven missions were on the program. During this time, 14 hidden fawns were able to save volunteers from the club. The missions were supported by drone accompaniment, which enable the meadows to be searched efficiently and recover the fawn in good time. The use takes place in areas with a working width of the agricultural machinery from 8 to 12 meters and speeds of up to 30 km/h.

A total of around 350 hectares of meadows were flown in 2025, with the smallest area 4 hectares and the largest 60 hectares. The tested areas included the "foal pasture" as well as meadows in the Beckerbruch and Rietzmecker Winkel. In addition to the fawns, four pheasant layers, including hens, and two young rabbits could also be saved. Andreas Tietz acts as the 1st chairman of the association, while Ronald Henze held the 2nd chair. The number of members of the association has increased from 7 to 15, and five members now have a drone driving license.

drones and modern technology in use

In order to further increase the efficiency of your missions, the club has purchased a drone with a thermal imaging camera. This technology not only helps to recognize the fawn from the air immediately, but also accelerate the entire rescue process. In Switzerland since 2023 drones of Swiss animal welfare STS have been supporting the fawn rescue during the havo. These missions show how modern technology and volunteer work can be combined to save animals. According to hunting statistics, around 1,700 fawns die from mowing machines every year; However, the number of unreported cases could be higher.

The drones fly off the mowing meadows by autopilot and transfer pictures to a monitor on the ground in real time. Due to its high body temperature, fawn appears as light spots in the dark meadow, which significantly improves its findability. A field of 2 to 3 hectares can be searched in only 20 to 30 minutes. After the mowing, the mountains are secured in a box that shadows with grass and complained with a stone before they are released again.

collaboration with farmers and social acceptance

The fawn rescue Dessau succeeds in maintaining a good reputation in society and among farmers. Farmers inform the association about their planned mahdter appointments, which makes the coordination and implementation of the missions easier. This mutual support is an important step to increase the number of saved animals annually and to increase awareness of the protection of fawns. Thanks to the efforts of the association and the support of modern technology, the fawn rescue is becoming increasingly effective and has saved thousands of animals in recent years.
