JJ Spaun: With magic strokes to the historic US Open victory!

JJ Spaun won the 125th US Open at Oakmont Country Club on June 16, 2025. With a total of 279 strokes, which is 1 under par, he was the only player to beat the course standard. Spaun secured the triumph with a birdie on the 18th hole after converting an impressive 64½-foot putt. This victory represents Spaun's first major in his career, which he was clearly pleased about.

After a difficult start in which he scored five bogeys on the first six holes, Spaun had to regain his composure. A strong finish with two birdies on the last two holes helped him overcome the pressure and win the tournament. He finished the final day with a 2-over 72 and was 3 under par on the back nine. His outstanding shots, including a 287-yard shot on the 17th hole, highlighted his strong comeback after more than an hour's weather disruption due to heavy rain.

The pursuers and the prize money

Robert MacIntyre of Scotland took second place with 281 strokes, a score of 1 over par, followed by Viktor Hovland of Norway, who took third place with 2 over par (282). Sam Burns, who led the competition after the first three rounds, fell behind after a double bogey on the 15th hole and finished tied for seventh at 4 over par. Adam Scott, trying to win his first major since 2013, finished the round at 9 over par and finished in 12th place.

For his victory, Spaun will receive prize money of 4.3 million US dollars (approx. 3.73 million euros), the largest in his career to date. His remarkable success continues this season, where he has already finished second twice, most notably at the Players Championship.

Special features of the tournament

What was particularly striking was that Spaun was the first U.S. Open winner is who started the final rounds with three consecutive holes over par. Although he ultimately triumphed, many of the favorites had to contend with disappointing rounds. Both Burns and Scott, who were in good form at the start of the weekend, were unable to build on their performances and had to drop back in the overall standings.

Spaun's Remarkable Performance once again shows the unpredictability of golf, where the tide can change in an instant. In particular, the weather conditions and the pressure the players were under contributed to the drama of the tournament. In the end, it was Spaun who survived the greatest pressure and was able to prove himself as champion.
