Fire in Hamburg clinic: 3 dead and suspect arrested!
On Sunday night, a devastating fire occurred in Hamburg's Marien Hospital, which claimed at least three lives. A 72-year-old patient is suspected of setting the fire and was arrested at the hospital on Sunday. The scene of the accident, a room in the geriatric ward, was particularly tragic because dead patients aged 84, 85 and 87 were found here.
A total of 34 people were injured in the incident, with one of them in a life-threatening condition. The rapid response of the fire department, which had around 160 emergency services on site, made it possible to extinguish the fire within around 20 minutes and stabilize the situation. To ensure the safety of all patients, parts of the hospital had to be evacuated and the rescue operations were completed after a certain period of time.
Investigations and psychological state of emergency
The investigation focuses on whether the accused was in an exceptional psychological state at the time of the crime. The suspect will be brought before a judge on Monday. The scene of the fire has already been confiscated and LKA fire investigators have begun securing evidence. Hamburg's Interior Senator Andy Grote called for the cause of the fire to be clarified quickly and thanked the emergency services for their quick work.
The clinic itself is one of the largest denominational hospitals in northern Germany and has around 600 beds. Around 93,000 patients are treated there every year. Christoph Schmitz, managing director of the Marienklinikum, announced that he would work closely with the authorities to determine the exact cause of the fire and ensure the safety of patients.
Archbishop Stefan Heße expressed his horror at the tragic events and thanked the emergency services. He plans to personally visit the clinic to comfort the injured and affected families. Stuttgart News and View report on the impact and grief caused by this incident in the region.
