Honoring volunteer heroes: DRK Rems-Murr celebrates committed citizens!

On May 26th, the German Red Cross (DRK) honors evening took place in the Rems-Murr district, where both volunteers and full-time employees were recognized for their valuable contributions. District manager Sven Knödler and DRK President Dr. Richard Sigel took on the ceremonial task of honoring the guests.

In total, over 60 volunteers received awards for their special services, long-standing membership and active activities. Those honored include Stefan Baumann from the DRK Waiblingen, Petra Fleischer from Winnenden, Günther Novotny from Schorndorf, Uwe Schoch from the DRK in Allmersbach im Tal and Thomas Schubert from Rudersberg. This recognition shows how important volunteer work is for the community.

Commitment in the Rems-Murr district

In the Rems-Murr district, around 2,000 volunteers help people in need. The DRK is responding to a fundamental need in society by offering support in the event of traffic accidents, natural disasters and for seniors living alone. Anyone interested in volunteering can get information and get involved at the district association in Waiblingen or at one of the many local associations. The DRK is looking for people with different talents, including paramedics, technicians and also chefs.

Commitment to the DRK is voluntary and free of charge, but travel costs as well as expenses for accommodation and meals are reimbursed. Volunteers are also insured in the event of accidents, which makes the safety of those active a top priority. The awarding of awards, such as the German Red Cross Medal of Honor or badges of honor for long-term membership, also illustrates the appreciation for voluntary commitment.

The role of volunteering in Germany

Volunteering is a mainstay of society in Germany. It includes voluntary, unpaid activities and plays a central role in many areas, such as in sports clubs, the volunteer fire department or in charities such as the DRK. The variety of possible applications is great, and the need for volunteers has increased in recent years, especially in the area of aid organizations. This is also reflected in the constantly growing number of requests from food banks and similar institutions that need more volunteers.

Since 1986, International Volunteer Day has been celebrated on December 5th to highlight the importance of volunteering worldwide. Commitment is not only visible in the volunteer work itself, but also in financial support and donations, which are essential for the implementation of various aid projects.

The DRK district association is optimistic about the future and is proud of the deserving volunteers who look after the well-being of others free of charge. They are the backbone of the organization and an indispensable part of social life in the Rems-Murr district.
