After disputes: Backnanger fire department is looking for a new commander!
The Backnang fire department is facing fundamental restructuring as full-time commander Daniel Schwaderer, who was only appointed to office in April 2024, is giving up his position early. After ZVW Schwaderer will move to Freudenstadt as district fire chief on April 1, 2026.
His resignation follows the decision of Deputy Commander Stefan Burr, who resigned in May 2025 for personal reasons. Since then, this process has been characterized by disputes within the management level. The Backnang fire department therefore urgently needs to reorganize itself and find a suitable successor for Schwaderer.
A repeated change at the top
Schwaderer's departure is the second rapid departure of a commander in a short period of time. His predecessor, Thomas Rohnacher, was transferred to the Tübingen regional council on November 1st, where he will work as a fire department officer in the department for police law, fire services, disaster control and rescue services BKZ reported. Rohnacher had only taken on the position of full-time commander two years ago and was not very present at the beginning of his term of office because he had to complete further training for the senior fire service. He completed this in March 2025.
The situation of the fire department in Backnang has caused concern among both city officials and firefighters. Timo Mäule, the head of the administrative department, confirmed that the situation had been imagined differently. The commander's position was therefore advertised immediately. The city hopes to be able to clarify the successor by February 2026.
Responsibility through to succession planning
Until a suitable successor is found, Stefan Burr, the deputy commander, will be responsible for the fire department. The numerous resignations within a short period of time pose major challenges for the organization and raise questions about internal stability.
The Backnang fire department sees itself in the critical situation of having to take a new path in order to meet future challenges and maintain operational readiness.
