HC Oppenweiler/Backnang: promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga perfect!

On the Pentecost weekend, HC Oppenweiler/Backnang achieved a historic success: the team achieved promotion to the 2nd men's handball league. Despite a defeat in the final second leg of the promotion round against Eintracht Hildesheim with 27:31, the clear victory in the first leg of 35:26 was enough to secure a place in the second highest German league. In the second leg in front of 2,400 spectators, Oppenweiler showed a fighting performance, but the lead from the first leg was ultimately decisive.

Before the decisive duel against Wolves Würzburg, coach Daniel Brack said that he was expecting tension in the team. In the last games against Waiblingen and Erlangen II, Oppenweiler achieved the biggest wins of the season and was therefore motivated to face Würzburg. Both teams were tied on points, with the winner of this game receiving a ticket for the promotion round, as second-placed SG Leutershausen decided not to take part. A draw would speak for Würzburg after they won in the first leg.

A farewell and a great success

The impending end of the career of Jürgen Müller, the experienced goalkeeper at HC Oppenweiler/Backnang, is particularly emotional for the team. Müller, who came to Oppenweiler from SG BBM Bietigheim in 2020, looks back on 20 years in professional handball. He is aware of the impending farewell, but remains focused and hopes to take the opportunity to reach the promotion round with his team. Müller emphasizes the positive development of the club and the family atmosphere that grew during his time there.

For the game against Würzburg, Müller expects a hard-fought game, but is optimistic that Oppenweiler, supported by the home advantage, will ultimately emerge as the winner. Brack also emphasizes the Wolves' strengths, in particular their aggressive defensive work and the high quality of their tempo game. The coach wants to learn from the previous defeat in the first leg in order to give his team the best possible chance of promotion.

HC Oppenweiler/Backnang has had a remarkable season and shows that hard work and team spirit are rewarded. With the prospect of the 2nd Handball Bundesliga, a new chapter begins for the club, while the players are motivated to continue their path to success and tackle the challenges ahead.
