Construction work on the Murrbahn: Where buses now run instead of trains!

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced that it will carry out extensive modernization work on the Murrbahn, which represents a significant investment in the infrastructure. From June 7th to June 23rd, 2025, work on the control and safety technology will take place between Backnang and Sulzbach. This means that the Murrbahn between Backnang and Murrhardt will be closed to train traffic from June 15, 2025, 6 a.m. to June 23, 2025, 5 a.m., as DB reports.

Customers can look forward to a comprehensive timetable and replacement transport concept. During the construction work there will be, among other things, changes to the timetable between Stuttgart and Gaildorf West. The trains on the MEX 90 and MEX 19 lines will be canceled between Stuttgart Hbf and Gaildorf West. The S-Bahn line S3 and the regional trains RE 90, which have special stops, offer alternatives.

Details about replacement transport

A replacement bus service will be set up. These run every two hours between Backnang and Gaildorf West, although there are special bus travel times that differ from the regular train times. In addition, it is not permitted to take bicycles on the replacement buses, and the stops for the replacement service are not necessarily located directly at the train stations, as the DB recommends.

The modernization work is part of a long-term strategy to improve the region's rail infrastructure. The DB has already announced previous construction work on the Murrbahn, which spanned the period from May 18 to June 16, 2024. These included the replacement of rails, sleepers and ballast and were necessary to ensure the safety and reliability of the rail network, such as InsideBW reports.

Future developments

The aim of these improvements is to strengthen the rail network and adapt the infrastructure to future requirements. The work on the Murrbahn is part of wider developments within DB, which also include other significant projects to modernize and expand the infrastructure in Germany. Information about these projects and additional measures can be found in DB reports, which provide an overview of the company's strategy here is summarized.

Travelers are asked to find out about alternative connections in good time and to use the DB Navigator app and bahn.de for up-to-date information. DB plans to update all timetable data soon and provide passengers with further details about the replacement stops.
