Transporter fire on the A7: road closed, driver uninjured!
On Friday morning at 4:45 a.m. there was a dramatic incident on the A7 towards Ulm. The driver of a 3.5-ton truck, whose vehicle lost power for unknown reasons, stopped on the hard shoulder shortly after the Giengen/Herbrechtingen junction. Immediately afterwards, the van burst into flames, prompting the fire department to come to the scene to put out the burning vehicle. Tragically, the sprinter burned out completely, like that Heidenheim newspaper reported.
Fortunately, the driver was uninjured, but the lane had to be completely closed while the fire was being extinguished and towed away. The right lane was also closed for rescue and towing operations. The fire department had support from the highway maintenance department, which secured the danger zone. It currently remains unclear whether the cause of the fire is related to the technical condition of the vehicle and the extent of the damage caused.
Compare to similar incidents
Similar incidents on highways shed light on the potential dangers of road traffic. For example, on November 18, 2024, a jeep caught fire on the A7 near Wäldi in the canton of Thurgau after it was parked on the hard shoulder. The fire department received the fire report shortly after 8 a.m. A series of explosions caused vehicle parts to be thrown meters away and the asphalt surface was significantly damaged. Here too, no one was injured, as in a report by 20 minutes documented.
As in the case of the van in Giengen, it is clear that technical defects in the vehicle can often have serious consequences. While the fire in Wäldi was caused by a technical defect, the exact cause of today's incident on the A7 remains unclear. Both cases highlight the need to carry out regular maintenance on vehicles to avoid such dangerous situations.
Traffic disruptions caused by operations
The operations of the fire brigade and rescue services led to traffic delays in both cases. The incident in Giengen caused the carriageway to be completely closed and significantly disrupted traffic flow. After the fire was extinguished, traffic was only directed past the scene at walking pace. A similar scenario occurred in Wäldi, where traffic was also temporarily blocked.
Overall, these incidents show how important quick reactions and effective crisis management in road traffic are in order to protect people and material and to restore traffic as quickly as possible.
