Rostock main station: Over 2 crimes per day – alarming results!

Rostock main station has developed into one of the most dangerous places in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. According to the Baltic Sea newspaper 761 crimes were registered here in 2024, with the majority of these crimes involving property damage. In comparison, Schwerin recorded 714 crimes at Marienplatz, which shows that crime at train stations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is omnipresent. The federal police speak of a worrying trend, as crimes at train stations increased overall from 4,553 in 2023 to 5,141 in 2024.

These alarming statistics have led to the police taking new measures. A mobile guard has been in use since the beginning of 2025 to increase security at train stations. A survey, the “Mobility Compass 2025”, shows that only 18.46% of people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania feel safe in local transport. Schwerin has the highest safety value with 21.25%, followed by Rostock with 20.67% and Vorpommern-Greifswald with 20.63%.

Security measures and operations

In order to counteract the increase in violent crime, a large police operation took place at several train stations, including Rostock Central Station, on May 29th and 30th, 2025. A total of 66 emergency services were involved Rostock Federal Police Inspectorate and other authorities involved. The officers carried out 309 control measures and initiated 15 criminal or administrative offense proceedings. The results of the operation include the confiscation of four prohibited knives and the discovery of cannabis on a suspect. In addition, some physical injuries and resistance against law enforcement officers were recorded at Warnemünde train station.

During this operation, the focus was also on identifying wanted people in order to further clarify the dark field regarding prohibited items. The one acting in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Bad Bramstedt Federal Police Directorate emphasizes the relevance of these measures to strengthen the feeling of security among travelers.

Crime in comparison

Compared to other Baltic Sea train stations, Rostock has a middle position in terms of registered crimes. While Rostock has 761 crimes, fewer than the Stralsund train station with 2,300, which is also considered a hotspot, the numbers at Schwerin main train station (420) and in Neustrelitz (196) are also worrying. Güstrow recorded 177 crimes. However, in the broader view of large cities on the Baltic Sea coast, Rostock does not play the main role; The Lübeck main station was confronted with 553 crimes and the Kiel main station with 1098 crimes, where an established drinking, drug and homeless scene also shapes the crime statistics.

Police efforts to improve public transport safety are at the heart of the current dialogue on public safety in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. With crime rates on the rise, a sustainable solution is urgently needed to restore citizens' trust in the safety of public transport.
