Protection for Arnum: 47 lime trees in danger – renovation causes excitement!

The long-planned renovation of Hiddestorfer Straße (L389) between Hiddestorf and Arnum is increasingly taking shape. The renovation was set to begin on April 3, 2025, but construction work has been affected by delays since the work began. The first construction phase was originally scheduled to begin on April 8th in order to progress the work in time for the opening of the outdoor pool on May 10th. As haz.de reports, a total of 47 linden trees are up for discussion here, 21 of which are to be felled.

The reason for the felling of the trees is the damage caused to the root system on the sidewalk and gutter system. In addition, the roots of the trees are very strong, which, according to leineblitz.de, entails extra labor-intensive planning. At an information event on April 22, 2025 at the Hiddestorf elementary school, around 40 participants dealt with the problem. The preservation of the trees was also discussed here, despite existing root damage.

Felling and replacement planting

The felling of the 21 lime trees is initially scheduled for October 2025 in order to comply with the species protection procedure. A stocking check is carried out beforehand in order to meet the legal requirements. According to current information, all 47 linden trees are still on site and it is being examined whether some can possibly be preserved through root caps and crown clearings. The Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Hanover region also got involved in the preparations, as there was already uncertainty about the preservation of the trees in advance.

Replacement plantings of a total of 63 trees are planned for the felled lime trees. In the discussion about the locations for these new trees, Barsinghausen is also being considered as a possible location. Despite the planned felling, the Hemmingen City Council is outraged by the originally planned approach, which eliminates the need for extensive sidewalk renovation. Instead, a sustainable sidewalk system is now being developed while the tree is being felled.

Delays in the construction process

Construction work in the second section of Hiddestorfer Straße is on hold due to delivery difficulties for shaft structures. This means that work on the main road will be suspended for around three weeks, which will also delay the entire renovation. Traffic is advised of diversions via district road 226 in the direction of Pattensen and federal road 3. These diversions are necessary to ensure the safety of road users, especially school children and people with reduced mobility.

In calendar weeks 24 and 25, further renovation work is scheduled to take place on the northern half of the road and parts of the Hoher Eschenweg / An der Landwehr intersection. The accessibility of the properties is always guaranteed, but delays due to weather or construction cannot be ruled out. The overarching goal of this renovation is to improve functionality and traffic safety over a stretch of around 3.3 kilometers.
