Shock in Hemmingen: Pedestrian runs in front of the tram and is slightly injured!
In the early hours of Sunday morning, an accident in Hemmingen-Westerfeld caused a stir. At around 2:30 a.m., a 19-year-old ran in front of a tram on line 13 that was running near Saarstrasse. The young man was slightly injured in the incident and was taken to a clinic for observation. Fortunately, the injured man's alcohol test came back negative. Police determined he missed the red light for pedestrians, which led to the accident.
After the incident, the city fire department was alerted, but their assistance was not required, so they were able to abandon the journey. An ambulance took the injured pedestrian to hospital. The route of line 13 was closed for about an hour before normal operations resumed at 3:20 a.m.
Another incident in Stuttgart
Another incident on the light rail is also causing unrest in Stuttgart. On Wednesday evening around 6 p.m. there was a collision between two light rail vehicles on line U13 in the area of Augsburger Straße/Deckerstraße bridge. A signal disturbance is suspected to be the probable cause. A 35-year-old man who was on the train heading towards Untertürkheim suffered minor injuries.
The disruption on the route between the Bad Cannstatt and Rosensteinpark stops was discovered at 1:15 p.m. and was expected to last until around 2:30 p.m. Rail traffic had to be closed for two hours while Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen GmbH (SSB) set up a replacement taxi service to transport the affected passengers. The material damage to the light rail vehicles is estimated at a six-figure amount. Road traffic was closed in the area of the accident for around 50 minutes, resulting in minor traffic delays. Investigations into the exact cause of the accident are currently underway. Particular attention is paid to the question of whether the signal was actually disturbed and how the collision occurred.
A previous similar incident that occurred in Stuttgart on February 23, 2024 resulted in several injuries, including a trapped tram driver, and has raised light rail safety awareness of increased risks. The current accidents raise questions about the safety and technical conditions of the light rail systems.
