Racist attacks in Berlin

At the same time, reports of anti-Semitic attacks in Germany are increasing. On Sunday night, two Molotov cocktails were thrown at a synagogue and a Jewish community center in Berlin, as dw.com reports. The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. in the Mitte district. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or property damage. The bottles landed on the sidewalk, broke, and the fire quickly went out.

But that wasn't enough: a man approached the synagogue in the morning and shouted anti-Semitic slogans. He was stopped by the police but was later released. An investigation has been initiated against him because he is criticized for inciting racial hatred and attempting to attack a public servant.

Reactions to the attacks

Chancellor Olaf Scholz strongly condemned the increasing anti-Semitic attacks and emphasized that such acts cannot be tolerated in Germany. The Israeli embassy called for decisive action against anti-Semitic attacks. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser focused on the protection of Jewish institutions in Germany and described the attack on the synagogue as a “heinous act.”

The Jewish community of Berlin called for clear solidarity with the affected synagogue and pointed out the growing insecurity that Jews in Berlin have to live with. At a time when both violent attacks and anti-Semitic incidents are on the rise, it is important that society stands together and acts together against this hatred.
