Saarlandstrasse in Hamburg: major renovation ensures better traffic conditions!

From June 30, 2023, Saarlandstrasse in Hamburg-Nord will be extensively renovated. This measure is carried out by the State Office for Roads, Bridges and Waterways (LSBG) and the Hamburg Energy Networks (HNE) and is necessary to remedy the poor condition of the road. The renovation process is expected to last until September 2027. During construction work, the road will remain single-lane so that traffic can continue to flow.

The renovation extends over a distance of around 1.2 kilometers between Jahnring and the Saarlandstraße subway station. As part of this, all four lanes will be completely repaired to ensure a permanently stable road surface. These measures are part of Hamburg's maintenance management for main roads, which aims to optimize traffic flow and safety. Adapted traffic light switching and improved intersection areas are also part of the plan.

Environmentally friendly initiative

A central element of the renovation is the ecological improvement of the area. As part of the work, sealed areas will be reduced and the proportion of green space will increase by around 1,000 square meters. The proportion of unsealed areas will increase from 21 to 26 percent. In the future, precipitation will be channeled into planted hollows to create retention areas to store excess water. As part of these measures, seven trees will be felled while 13 new plants will be planted.

Once the renovation is complete, the historic town hall bridge will only be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists, thereby strengthening the spatial effect of the historic surroundings. This step will be carried out in close coordination with the Monument Protection Office to ensure that the work in the listed city park environment, which is strongly influenced by the architect Fritz Schumacher, proceeds synergistically.

Traffic flow and safety

Another goal is to increase traffic safety by making all crossing points and traffic lights barrier-free. Cycling facilities will be reorganized and expanded throughout, including wider cycle paths and the creation of a cycle lane. The traffic lights at the junction with the Südring will also be eliminated, which should improve the efficiency of traffic flow.

The total cost of the project is around 8.45 million euros, of which 1.2 million euros are earmarked for the laying of cable protection pipes to support future planned high-voltage lines. These infrastructure measures are intended to increase security of supply in the region and at the same time minimize negative environmental consequences.

Residents will be regularly informed throughout the construction period, and diversions will be signposted accordingly to ensure traffic flow and accessibility. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be guided safely through the construction sites, which should take all traffic routes into account.

In summary, the renovation of Saarlandstrasse will not only improve the city's transport infrastructure, but also make an important contribution to ecological sustainability and the historical preservation of the Stadtpark campus.
