Die Problematik von Munition im Meer ist in den deutschen Nord- und Ostseegewässern ein drängendes Thema. Matthes äußert, dass die Sicherung von munitionsbelasteten Gebieten in der Ostsee unzureichend organisiert ist. Unresolved questions and inadequate measures to take environmental protection and safety into account are still in the air, while the federal government is providing extensive financial resources to accelerate the recovery of contaminated sites.
Ein Sofortprogramm der Bundesregierung sieht die Bereitstellung von 100 Millionen Euro vor. Diese Mittel sollen dazu dienen, umweltbelastende Kampfstoffe aus dem Meer zu beseitigen. Over 200 experts from 16 countries recently gathered at the “Ammunition Clearance Week” in Kiel to discuss solutions for removing dangerous contaminated sites and to address the protection of critical infrastructure. Ein weiteres Highlight der Konferenz war die Präsentation einer innovativen schwimmenden Entsorgungsplattform durch die Kieler Werft TKMS.
Technological advances in recovery
Im Rahmen des Projekts sollen ab Juli 2024 neue Technologien zur Erkennung und Bergung von Kriegsmaterial getestet werden. Betroffene Bereiche sind unter anderem vor Pelzerhaken und Haffkrug in der Lübecker Bucht. This project, which aims to develop a floating facility for the large-scale recovery of old munitions, is being carried out under the patronage of the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature (MEKUN).
Ein bedeutender Teil des Projekts ist die Pilotbergung, die im Juli 2024 beginnen soll. Hierbei wollen die Bergungsunternehmen insgesamt 50 Tonnen Munition aus dem Meer bergen. Schleswig-Holstein's Environment Minister Tobias Goldschmidt emphasizes the urgency of these measures in order to avoid future environmental pollution. „Die Bergung alter Weltkriegsmunition ist essenziell für den Schutz unserer Gewässer“, erklärt Goldschmidt.
Challenges and measures
Salvaging in the Bay of Lübeck poses particular challenges because there are various types of ammunition in the seabed, including cartridges, ammunition boxes and even 500-kilogram bombs. Schätzungen zufolge lagern in der deutschen Nord- und Ostsee rund 1,6 Millionen Tonnen Munitionsaltlasten. In order to carry out the work efficiently and safely, remote-controlled underwater vehicles and specialized gripping tools will be used.
The autonomous diving robot “Greyshark” is also used, which is equipped with 17 sensors and can analyze the condition of the ammunition. Für den September sind weitere Bergungsaktionen in der Lübecker Bucht geplant, um Erkenntnisse für eine systematische Bergung zu gewinnen. Parallel dazu ist ein Projekt in der Mecklenburger Bucht angedacht.
Die entsorgte Munition wird in einer Verbrennungsanlage im niedersächsischen Munster behandelt. In order to advance developments, the federal government is prepared to build a functional floating platform for the screening, recovery and disposal of waste protection material by the end of 2026.
Overall, it is clear that with the measures implemented and planned, both international cooperation and state-of-the-art technologies play a crucial role in overcoming the challenges of combating contaminated sites in the sea. The prospects for a munitions-free Baltic Sea by the end of the 2040s are optimistic, but require that sufficient financial resources are available and technological advances are made fruitful.
