Bönnigheim is fighting for funding for urgently needed town hall renovations!

The city of Bönnigheim is faced with the challenge of modernizing its town hall in terms of energy efficiency and making it barrier-free. At a recent meeting, city councilor Dorothea Bechtle-Rüster from the SPD questioned the feasibility of a possible cost increase. Mayor Albrecht Dautel also expressed concerns about the uncertainty as to whether the state will provide funding to the current extent. These changes are necessary because the condition of the town hall and its infrastructure require urgent action.

The planned renovation includes far-reaching measures, including converting the citizens' office on the ground floor and moving the facade. Initial cost estimates for the entire measure amount to around 2.95 million euros, of which 60 percent are considered eligible for funding. City planner Matheis-Lange describes the town hall facility as the most important point of urban development in the medium term. If there is a renovation, the empty building at Bismarckstrasse 5 will be demolished in order to redesign the area and expose the burglary tower, which is located directly behind it.

Funding and challenges

Given the urgent need for renovation, securing funding is of central importance. In a comparable context, Christian Bernreiter, Minister of State in the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Construction and Transport, presented a funding notice of 3 million euros to the city of Regensburg on July 26, 2024. These financial resources are part of a comprehensive general renovation of the New Town Hall on Minoritenweg, which is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of funding measure 2.2 for energy efficiency in municipal infrastructures. A total of 24 million euros in EU funds are planned for the energy-related renovation of municipal infrastructure in the ERDF program 2021 to 2027, which will be topped up with state and municipal funds.

The renovation of the Regensburg town hall is intended to enable annual CO2 savings of around 200 tons and is an example of the type of projects that Bönnigheim is also striving for. With similar funding opportunities, those responsible in Bönnigheim hope to successfully raise additional funds and create a future-oriented cityscape after the town hall is initially tackled.

Future prospects

After the renovation of the town hall, the city is focusing on the empty building at Bismarckstrasse 5, the demolition of which will contribute to the redesign of the area. The redesign of the Burgplatz is also on the agenda of the city planners, who aim to not only improve the functionality of the buildings, but also increase the quality of life of the citizens.
