BMW rolls over near Besigheim: driver injured after microsleep!

A serious traffic accident occurred on the night of May 19, 2025 on Löchgauer Straße near Besigheim. A 68-year-old driver of a BMW suffered minor injuries in the incident. The accident occurred around 1:00 a.m. when the driver was traveling from the B27 towards Löchgau. According to initial findings, microsleep was the suspected cause of the loss of control of the vehicle, which caused it to skid, hit a tree and ultimately overturn. The BMW landed on its roof and had to be towed away after the estimated damage was around 40,000 euros. The driver was able to free himself from the vehicle and received medical care on site. No hospitalization was required. During the operation, Löchgauer Straße was completely closed for around an hour. Two Bietigheim police patrol cars, an ambulance and the local fire department were on duty during the accident.

The issue of microsleep is not just an individual risk, but a serious problem in road traffic. According to information from Rechtsanwalt.de, numerous traffic accidents every year are the result of fatigue and microsleep, which lead to property damage and personal injury. Drivers who fall asleep at the wheel and then cause an accident could face criminal liability. Failure to recognize signs of tiredness could be interpreted as negligence, which could not only lead to an investigation for road traffic hazards in accordance with Section 315c of the Criminal Code, but also to the revocation of your driving license.

Consequences of microsleep in traffic

German road traffic suffers from significant consequences of fatigue. In 2020, authorities in Germany counted 26 fatal traffic accidents due to fatigue. The extent of the problem is evident with 1,448 traffic accidents in which people were injured. Around 83% of these accidents involved car drivers. Informal surveys suggest that a significant proportion of drivers, including 26% of car drivers surveyed, have experienced falling asleep while driving in their lives.

Nodding off for just five seconds at a speed of 80 km/h means that the vehicle travels 110 meters uncontrollably. Given these alarming figures, it is important to raise awareness of the risks of driving fatigue. Experts advocate verifiable driving and rest times as well as additional measures to prevent accidents due to fatigue.

The incident near Besigheim is a stark reminder of how quickly microsleep can lead to dangerous situations in traffic. While the driver in this case was lucky and sustained minor injuries, legal and social responsibility for such incidents could have far-reaching consequences.
