District President hands over millions for Igersheim and Weikersheim!
The city of Igersheim and the neighboring municipality of Weikersheim recently received significant funding from the Baden-Württemberg urban development funding program. District President Susanne Bay presented the relevant notices on May 26, 2025 and underlined the importance of this financial support for the development of the two cities.
Igersheim benefits from a funding amount of 1,100,000 euros, which is intended for the “Ortskern III” renovation measure. These financial resources aim to improve the quality of life and stay in the historic town center. Measures to modernize municipal facilities and create new social meeting places are an integral part of the project. The initiative is part of the comprehensive “Future Strategy Igersheim 2030+” and has received a total of 15,265,094 euros in financial aid since the 1990s. Interestingly, “Ortskern III” was included in urban development funding in 2020 and has since been funded with a total of 5,869,271 euros.
Funding for Weikersheim
Another highlight is the support for Weikersheim, which is supported by two funding notifications. The municipality will receive 800,000 euros for the “City Center IV – Energy Efficient Urban Renovation” measure and 500,000 euros for the new “Revitalization of the Laukhuff Area / Northern City Entrance” measure. The aim of these renovation measures in Weikersheim is to design the historic city center for the future in order to preserve the unique old town charm. In addition to modernizing existing buildings and reactivating vacant properties, the digital infrastructure is also being expanded.
The redesign of the Laukhuff area, which is to be converted into a multifunctional quarter, is a particular focus. Both residential and commercial space will be created. The state of Baden-Württemberg is supporting this redesign with 500,000 euros.
Background and outlook
Since its introduction in 1971, urban development funding has had the goal of adapting cities to economic, social and ecological changes. This year, 248 million euros are available across the country for renovation measures, of which around 90 million euros will flow to the Stuttgart administrative district and support a total of 109 urban renewal projects. This funding is not only a financial incentive, but also a signal for sustainable urban development structures. The federal government provides the funds in conjunction with state and local funds to strengthen the functionality of inner cities and town centers and to counteract social injustices, as described stadtebaufoerderung.info the objectives of the programs.
Comprehensive renovation measures were recently inspected in Igersheim by representatives of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for Regional Development and Housing. These include the renovated Möhlerplatz, the new Möhlergarage and the redesigned Bad Mergentheimer Straße. Preparations for the reconstruction of the intersection area Bad Mergentheimer Str./Hermann-von-Mittnacht-Str./Bahnhofstr. run for autumn/winter 2024. The entire process of redeveloping the town center in Igersheim has provided for approved financial aid of around 10 million euros since 2011, which underlines the city's dynamism and commitment.
The local developments in both municipalities not only represent an improvement in the transport infrastructure, but also targeted, sustainable urban development. These initiatives show how important urban development funding is for creating livable and future-proof places, as is already the case rp.baden-wuerttemberg.de explained in detail. The coming years promise exciting developments for Igersheim and Weikersheim as they combine their historic charm with modern flair.
