Bathing lakes in Baden-Württemberg: Where swimming is safe and where it is not!

The Ministry of Health of Baden-Württemberg has published current information on the water quality of the state's swimming lakes. Based on a total of 311 regularly inspected bathing locations, it can be determined that 97 percent of them have “very good” or “good” water quality. This represents positive news for bathers, as the bathing lakes perform well in European comparison. Health Minister Manne Lucha expressed optimism about water conditions and stressed the importance of regular inspections for public health. This, reported Mercury.

Despite the overall positive results, there are still some exceptions. The Sunthauser See in Bad Dürrheim has been closed since 2021 due to increased microbiological pollution. In addition, swimming in the Metzisweiler Weiher in Bad Wurzach is not recommended after increased microbial levels were detected there in August and September 2023, but there are currently no further abnormalities. The situation in these bathing lakes highlights the challenges that must be overcome in maintaining high water quality.

Bathing lakes with sufficient quality

In addition to the bathing lakes already mentioned, there are four others that are currently classified as “sufficient”. These are:

  • Badesee Buch in Rainau (Ostalbkreis)
  • Baggersee Eggenstein in Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen (Kreis Karlsruhe)
  • Badesee Hermuthausen in Ingelfingen (Hohenlohekreis)
  • Stausee in Mulfingen (Hohenlohekreis)

The water quality of these swimming lakes should be viewed with caution and bathers are encouraged to follow current health authority recommendations. They take water samples at least once a month during the bathing season, which lasts from June to September, to ensure the safety of bathers.

Influence of weather events and hygiene

Another important topic is the influence of weather events on water quality. Particularly heavy rainfall can cause germs and pollutants from the surrounding area to enter the bathing lakes. In addition, a high number of water birds contribute to the hygiene burden. It is therefore advisable to exercise particular caution in the event of changes in the weather or unpleasant smells and to observe the information and warnings on the Baden-Württemberg bathing water map, which can be viewed online, as well as from daily news is presented.

Overall, it should be noted that Baden-Württemberg offers a wide range of swimming opportunities, but there are also clear risks. Swimming in rivers is not recommended due to inadequate controls and uncertainty about water quality. Therefore, every bather should be well informed and always pay attention to the current situation in the bathing lakes.
