Storm chaos in Germany: Thunderstorms and hail threaten numerous regions!
On the night of Sunday, June 2, 2025, there were severe storms in several federal states in Germany, which are also expected the following day. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued new weather warnings, and in Bavaria in particular, police and emergency services had to be deployed a total of 40 times due to the extreme weather conditions to clear fallen trees and secure flooded streets. Rail traffic was also affected, with route closures and delays caused by objects on the tracks, it was reported fr.de.
On Saturday evening, meteorologists warned of severe thunderstorms that would bring rainfall of up to 15 liters per square meter. In many regions there is a threat of thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail and wind gusts of up to 70 km/h. Saxony and southern Germany are particularly affected, where red level severe weather warnings have been issued in some areas, including between Nördlingen and Ingolstadt. These warnings include hazards such as lightning, falling branches and flooding.
Current weather situation in Bavaria
The period of severe weather continued in Bavaria, where golf ball-sized hail fell on Wednesday, June 5, 2025. The DWD has again issued thunderstorm warnings for Thursday. The level two (of four) warnings affect, among others, the cities of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, Pfaffenhofen a.d. Ilm and Regensburg. Storm gusts and heavy rain are also expected here, which could lead to further disruptions in the regions mentioned merkur.de reported.
There was less damage than feared on Wednesday, but fallen trees and flooded storm drains were still reported. In Langquaid (Kelheim district) wind speeds of over 100 km/h were measured. The rain was heaviest in Zwiesel (Regen district) and Regensburg, where around 26 l/m² were recorded each. This is not an isolated phenomenon but part of an unsettled weather pattern that will continue in the coming days.
Impact on infrastructure
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the effects of the storms were also significant. There were numerous operations there due to full cellars and flooded streets, fortunately without any injuries being reported. In Erftstadt, for example, the water was up to half a meter high in some areas. A lightning strike in Thuringia led to a roof fire, but no one was injured. Several regional trains in Rhineland-Palatinate were temporarily blocked, but these restrictions were lifted on Sunday morning.
The weather forecast remains tense. The DWD warned of a strong thunderstorm on Sunday morning with rainfall of up to 25 liters per square meter and wind gusts of up to 60 km/h. The weather situation is expected to ease on Monday, although it will still be cloudy in southern Germany with isolated showers.
