Future for rural areas: Minister Hauk starts innovation projects!

On June 5, 2025, Minister Peter Hauk emphasized the importance of rural areas in Baden-Württemberg. During a day-long trip on the Filstalbahn from Göppingen to Beimerstetten, he gave insights into various projects that promote the further development of these regions. Under the umbrella of the Cabinet Committee on Rural Areas, innovative approaches to strengthening rural communities are being pursued. The state government has set itself the task of further developing rural areas through targeted funding and addressing challenges such as climate resilience and demographic change. According to baden-wuerttemberg.de, the state government is pursuing the goal of creating space-saving living space and at the same time driving forward economic transformation.

The Rural Development Program (ELR) is the focus of the funding measures and has been successfully implemented for 30 years. It serves as a flexible funding instrument for the structural development of rural communities and villages, which is managed by the Ministry of Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection. The focus of the program includes the renovation of buildings in the town center, securing basic services and the creation of jobs rp.baden-wuerttemberg.de.

Visits and project funding

During his trip, Minister Hauk visited several ELR-funded projects in the region. In Amstetten, the program included the “YSIO-fit” physiotherapy center, the Albhotel zum Bahnhöfle and the “Stubersheimer Hof” hotel-restaurant. Maintaining and supporting local supply facilities in rural areas was particularly important to Hauk. In Westerstetten he also visited the agricultural trading company Lehner Agrar GmbH, a market leader for spelled seeds.

Another highlight of the day was the visit to the Laubholz Technical Center in Göppingen. The focus here is on cost-efficient production of carbon fibers, which corresponds to the state bioeconomy strategy. This strategy strives for a raw material-efficient and circular economy. The Biolandhof Seiffert GbR was also visited in the district, which combines pasture farming with a milking robot. Increasing the proportion of organically farmed land in Baden-Württemberg to 30-40% by 2030 is a central goal of the state government.

Innovations for a sustainable future

The state government plans to further develop the “Organic from Baden-Württemberg” action plan. The ÖkoNetzBW platform is intended to promote a dialogue about sustainable practices and projects in the field of bioeconomy. In addition to these measures, support through market structure support and innovation support for mechanical engineering will continue to be expanded.

The ELR program also offers municipalities, associations, companies and private individuals the opportunity to apply for funding. However, applications can only be submitted by cities and municipalities that have to present their development ideas. The applications are processed by the regional councils, which are also responsible for approving projects aimed at the common good. L-Bank is responsible for payment and settlement rp.baden-wuerttemberg.de.

With his visit, Minister Hauk sent a strong signal for the future of rural areas and focused on the diversity and innovative strength of these regions. Rural areas remain a central component of development policy in Baden-Württemberg.
