Mountain rescue service saves couple after fall in Aufhausen – lucky in misfortune!
On Whit Sunday, June 8, 2025, the Geislingen-Wiesensteig and Göppingen mountain rescue services were alerted near Aufhausen. The couple, who found themselves in a difficult situation, wanted to get to the Alb plateau from an unmarked path that was marked as a footpath in an outdoor app. Shortly after 3 p.m., a 35-year-old fell below the eaves and slid about 15 meters down the steep slope. Luckily she was able to hold on to branches and prevented anything worse from happening.
Her companion, who left the path to get better reception for the emergency call, discovered that the mountain rescue service's journey to the scene was made more difficult by the weather conditions and the soggy ground. When they arrived, the couple could not provide their exact location, further complicating the situation.
Deployment of the mountain rescue service
After some time, the mountain rescue service managed to establish contact with the victims. Two mountain rescuers rappelled down to the two of them and secured the 35-year-old with a rescue triangle. She was brought back onto the path using a pulley. Her companion was also rescued using rope safety. Fortunately, both people remained uninjured.
A total of 14 mountain rescue teams with three vehicles were on duty for three hours. Returning from the site proved to be challenging as chains had to be put on two vehicles after the operation. A large part of the time was also spent cleaning the material.
Background to mountain accidents
This scene reflects a larger problem that is becoming increasingly common in the mountains. Reports of serious accidents are increasing, mainly due to the use of inadequately marked paths. In recent years, many hikers have planned their routes through digital apps, which do not always offer the best or safest choice. In such cases, dangerous situations can quickly arise that require emergency services to intervene.
Further information on current accidents in the mountains can be found at Alpin. It is important to always pay attention to the markings when hiking and stick to designated trails to avoid such risky situations.
