The Blumen Pfeffer nursery in Süßen will cease operations after 122 years. The last day of opening is planned for January 31, 2026. Martina and Alfred Pfeffer, who have been running the company in the fourth generation since 1998, announced that the closure was primarily due to a lack of staff and a lack of successors. This comes at a time when the nursery is struggling with increasing pressure, with five employees quitting in 2025 alone.
Although it was possible to increase the number of employees again, layoffs occurred again in May, which further aggravated the situation. Staffing the Saturday sales is particularly challenging. Alfred and Martina Pfeffer's children have chosen other career paths and show no interest in going into gardening.
Unchanged high quality and tradition
Blumen Pfeffer is known for the variety of home-grown plants and has built up a loyal customer base in the district, consisting of generations of loyal buyers. The nursery area covers around one hectare, which houses 6,000 square meters of greenhouses. Despite the difficult decision to close the nursery, the popular Advent market will take place as usual in December.
There are already solutions for taking over the work in the cemetery that was previously carried out by the gardening center. However, the chances of selling the site are considered to be poor and it is planned to subsequently sell the property as building land. The nursery was founded in 1904 by Karl Pfeffer and looks back on a long tradition that is now coming to an end.
