During the day on the goat farm: Experience the cheese culture on the Müritz!

On June 11, 2025, numerous cheese dairy and agricultural operators will reopen their doors to the public. Susanne Klein, a committed agricultural economist and mother of three children, is also planning to take part in this day, which is appreciated by visitors. Two years ago she welcomed 600 visitors to her goat farm in Retzow an der Müritz, where she produced cheese, offered courses and served coffee, tea and cake. Klein, who has been running her farm successfully since 2008, would like to take a short break this year and visit the neighboring farm, which increases her anticipation for the event, but she remains a fixture in the regional agricultural scene. Other farms in the region also rely on more visitors. Hans-Dieter Gabel, who has headed the Pribsleben agricultural cooperative “Torney Milch und Fleisch” since the 1990s, has recorded a steady increase in the number of visitors in recent years. Last year, more than 4,000 guests came to his farm, where 400 beef cattle are raised and 2,300 pigs are fattened. In addition to guided tours of the stables, Gabel and his team also offer the opportunity to taste sausage and meat products based on old regional recipes. The farmer attaches great importance to his preparations for the day, but the weather always remains a major concern for him, as he has only been able to receive twelve guests when the weather was bad.

Urban oases and animal experiences

But not only in the countryside, but also in the city, there are places that enable nature and encounters. The Charlottenburg goat farm, which was founded 30 years ago on the initiative of Block Initiative 128, is an example of this. Residents successfully campaigned for the conversion of a demolition site, thereby creating a small oasis for relaxation in the city center. The goat farm not only houses goats like Samson and Dima, but also bantam chickens and a beehive. Visitors are welcome to feed the animals, but only with vegetables and trimmings, which supports the valuable ecological aspect of the facility. Visit Berlin reports that…

The goat farm also offers regular volunteer weekends where young and old can actively participate in maintaining the facility. Admission is free and promotes community and awareness of nature, especially in an urban setting.
