Snake in residential area: Fire brigade saves smooth snake from worse!
On Tuesday, May 31, 2025, a discovery in Geislingen an der Steige, Göppingen district, caused a stir. A resident found a snake in her area that was about 50 centimeters long. Due to the uncertainty about the type of animal, the fire department was called to clarify the situation and capture the animal. The fire department experts consulted the Wilhelma in Stuttgart to determine the type of snake.
After the investigation it turned out that it was a domestic smooth snake. These non-venomous snakes are widespread in Europe, especially in warm areas of southern Germany. After the smooth snake was identified, it was safely released into the forest. It is important to note that smooth snakes are protected and are often confused with the poisonous adder, which can lead to unfounded fear and in some cases the killing of these animals.
Smooth snake: Non-poisonous and fascinating
The smooth snake, also known as the smooth snake, is a non-venomous species that kills its prey by strangling it. The name “smooth snake” is derived from the snake’s smooth, unkeeled scales. There are several subspecies within the genus, but these are controversial among experts. A total of seven snake species have been identified in Germany, including five non-venomous and two poisonous. Smooth snakes typically reach 60 to 80 centimeters in length and are one of the most common snake species in the country. The smooth snake found was probably not yet fully grown, as it was slightly smaller than average at 50 centimeters.
The commitment to protecting these animals and their habitats is also demonstrated by organizations such as German Wildlife Foundation promoted. The foundation is committed to preserving wild animals in Germany and creating new natural areas. It offers information about nature and species protection, as well as nature education publications that are intended to benefit children and young people in particular.
Given the frequent confusion, it is of great importance to promote distinction between the different species of snakes. The smooth snake, which is native to the Wilhelma area and the forests of Baden-Württemberg, must not be persecuted by humans. Their role in the ecosystem is important and their protection should be of common interest to the public.
