Rapid Sewage Inspection in Owen Sound: New Program Launches!

The City of Owen Sound has launched a new sewer inspection program starting Monday, June 2nd. This project is scheduled to last approximately three weeks and will focus primarily on the area east of the Sydenham River near the city center. The exact locations of the inspection are visible on a map on the city's website, allowing residents to find out in advance.

The city is once again working with Rapid Assessment Technology Services Inc. (RATS) to carry out the inspections. This company specializes in non-invasive methods that allow quick and efficient assessment of the condition of sewers. The acoustic inspection method used can reveal potential problems such as blockages or structural weaknesses without disrupting residents' water supply or sanitation.

The advantages of the new technology

RATS offers a decisive advantage over conventional methods. Traditionally, sewer line inspection is a costly and time-consuming process. Using CCTV to inspect the entire network is not only resource intensive, but also requires strict protocols for access to confined spaces. These require expensive training and special personal protective equipment, which further slows the process. However, RATS' innovative approaches allow comprehensive network health data to be collected in a fraction of the time, massively increasing efficiency and reducing overall costs.(RATS)

The City of Owen Sound manages a total of 118 kilometers of sewer pipes, and wastewater treatment plants process an average of 12 million liters of wastewater per day. Although no interruptions to water service are expected during the inspection period, temporary local traffic disruptions may occur at work sites. The City has clearly communicated that safety and minimizing disruption to residents is a top priority throughout the process.

Implementing this inspection program is an important step for the City to maintain infrastructure and ensure wastewater treatment remains efficient and safe. Residents can therefore look forward to better maintenance of the wastewater infrastructure and thus an improved quality of life in their area.
