Plainedge trembles, narrowly wins: dramatic win against Lynbrook!
In the exciting quarterfinal game of the Nassau Class C playoffs on May 23, 2025, the Plainedge team triumphed over Lynbrook with a narrow 12-11 victory. Plainedge, seeded as the tournament's third team, put in a strong performance, leading by three goals at halftime and extending the lead to four goals in the fourth quarter before Lynbrook mounted a late comeback.
Brian Keaveney was the standout performer for Plainedge with three goals and three assists, while Owen Donnellan also scored three goals. Dom Agovino and Brady Kelley each contributed two goals in the win. Andrew Picardi scored the decisive goal that secured the victory. Coach Dan Achatz emphasized the importance of the win moving forward in the playoffs after the win helped Plainedge improve its record to 8-9.
Drama in the final quarter
Lynbrook, which started the tournament as the sixth team, did not lose heart in the final quarter. However, after a goal from Jack LaBarbera cut the deficit to 9-8, Plainedge was able to pull away to 12-8 with goals from Agovino, Keaveney and Picardi. Lynbrook responded with two goals from Luke Dantona and Bennett Votano, building tension as the score dropped to 12-11 with 2:44 left to play.
However, a potential equalizer by LaBarbera was disallowed by the referees because he had jumped into the goal area. After the game, Lynbrook coach Bill Luzzi was disappointed with the outcome, especially given the performance of his seniors. With the loss, Lynbrook improved its record to 11-6.
Outlook for the semi-finals
Plainedge now face the challenge of facing second-placed opponents Wantagh, who knocked Plainedge out of the tournament in the previous two years, in next Wednesday's semi-final. The winners of Wantagh and Plainedge are clearly the focus of the Nassau County playoffs, which continue this week for all Classes A, B and C. With the quarter-final round over, an exciting picture emerges for the upcoming encounters and the Plainedge team will be looking to carry the momentum from this exciting win.
This season's playoffs have already featured many close and dramatic games, such as the Class B matchups, where top teams Garden City and Manhasset are the favorites. Garden City, with a 15-3 record last season, and Manhasset, which lost the title last year, are considered serious contenders. The Class A matches also turned heads, with Farmingdale and Massapequa holding their own as strong teams.
