Young star Owen Cooper: From school to Netflix – an exciting rise!
Owen Cooper, a rising star in the acting world, recently made waves with his role in a new Netflix drama. After intensive weekly acting courses at The Drama MOB in Manchester, Cooper suddenly found himself in the spotlight when he was given the opportunity to play the lead role of Jamie, a 13-year-old accused of murdering a classmate. In a self-video he submitted for the casting, he took on the role of the guilty-and-innocent-seeming student, but Cooper was unsure of his abilities and thought the recording was poor. Surprisingly, he was invited by the producers to take part in several recall screenings with director Philip Barantini and co-writer Stephen Graham. This opportunity turned out to be a turning point in his career, as Screen Daily reports.
The love of acting and the challenge of playing the role drove Cooper. Filming took place in a one-take format, which meant that the crew and actors had to take special care. Each of the four one-hour episodes required two weeks of rehearsals and one week of filming. In addition, the pressure was enormous, as any mistake could jeopardize an entire recording. Nevertheless, Cooper soon felt an almost natural connection with the technology and worked intensively on the script. Supported by his colleagues, including Erin Doherty, who plays his therapist, he mastered the difficult scenes despite initial nervousness.
Challenge and success
When the show finally arrived on Netflix in the UK, Cooper was overwhelmed by the positive response. The series reached number one on the Netflix charts in just three hours. Cooper, who will also appear as young Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell's new work, sees his work as not just a career goal, but also an important message for young people. He hopes the show leaves a lasting impression and raises awareness of the consequences of actions.
In the context of Netflix's growing offering of international content, Cooper is not alone. Recently, Korean series have seen a huge boom among viewers. According to an article on BonitaKenderson, 80% of Netflix subscribers watch Korean content. The platform has a variety of new series planned for 2025, including the third season of “Squid Game” as well as new titles such as “The Leopard”. This thematic diversity ranges from historical dramas to thrillers to romance and significantly expands Netflix's international portfolio.
The combination of Cooper's current success in acting and the boom in Korean series shows how dynamic and diverse the media landscape is today. Audiences around the world are hungry for new stories and perspectives, while talent like Owen Cooper seize these opportunities and be remembered for their work.
