Corpus Christi procession in Nürtingen: streets closed!
Next Thursday, June 19, 2025, an important celebration will take place in Nürtingen: The Catholic parish of St. Johannes is organizing a Corpus Christi procession. This traditional celebration, which means “Festival of the Body and Blood of Christ” in Old High German, begins with a festive Eucharist and is then celebrated with a procession through the city. The procession begins at the city church of St. Laurentius and leads through various central streets.
The route of the procession runs along Kirchstrasse, Schillerplatz, Am Kührain and Steinengrabenstrasse into Vendelaustrasse. During the event, the aforementioned streets will be closed to vehicle traffic in order to enable the numerous participants to have a safe celebration, as [ntz.de](https://www.ntz.de/nuertingen/artikel_in-nuertingen- Werden-an-fronleichnam-einige-strassen-gesperrt.html) reports.
Background to Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is celebrated on the second Thursday after Pentecost and has a long history. The origin goes back to a vision of the Augustinian nun Juliana of Liège in 1209. Pope Urban IV officially introduced the festival in 1264, and the first processions took place in Cologne in the 1270s. The festival is celebrated as a public holiday in several federal states in Germany, as well as in some Catholic communities in Saxony and Thuringia. During the processions, priests carry the monstrance with the consecrated host, which is of great importance for the believers. This was described in detail in the [Catholic Church Stuttgart](https://www.kath-kirche-stuttgart.de/service/journal/detail/stuttgarter-katholiken- Feiern-fronleichnam).
During the Corpus Christi celebrations of the entire Northwest parish in Stuttgart, which includes the parishes of St. Josef and St. Monika, among others, a service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wormser Platz. Afterwards there will be a procession to St. Theresia, for which the festival will close on the Theresienwiese in front of the parish hall with various activities for young and old.
In the city center, the communities of St. Eberhard, St. Georg and St. Konrad gather to celebrate together, with a Eucharist celebration taking place in the courtyard of the Old Castle at 10 a.m. The festivities also include a festive program with musical accompaniment and refreshing food. The festival is not only a religious gathering, but also a social event that strengthens the community.
Through these solemn events, Corpus Christi is celebrated not only among the faithful, but also among the general public - a tradition that is deeply rooted and important for the Catholic community in the region.
