Bomb threat in Esslingen: schools closed, police investigating!

Last week, the Free Evangelical School in Mettingen, Esslingen, received a bomb threat via email, which led to the school's immediate closure and the cancellation of classes. Classes took place again as normal on the following Thursday. Regarding the threat, the police said they had not identified any specific threat, which was the basis for the school management's decision to reopen. Corina Schimitzek, the head of the Nürtingen school district, explained the process in the event of such threats: First the police are informed, followed by a message to the school authority and the school district. If the police do not “objection” the school must remain closed. The decision as to whether classes are canceled rests with the school management themselves, said Schimitzek.

The bomb threat at the Esslingen school is part of a worrying, nationwide phenomenon. A similar wave of threatening emails was recorded during the Abitur exams in Baden-Württemberg, which affected numerous schools. Overall, a low three-digit number of emails were sent to schools in the region with very similar content. Although every email is checked by investigators, there is no evidence of a specific threat. To date, the police have not become aware of any evictions from school buildings. According to the Ministry of Culture, the Abitur exams went smoothly, which reduces fears about the stability of school operations.

Reactions and investigations

The police are currently withholding information about the ongoing investigation, which causes understanding and concerned reactions from parents and students. However, the management of the Free Evangelical School and other affected institutions immediately informed the police in order to deal with the incident accordingly. The security situation therefore remains a central issue that concerns school communities, especially during exam time.

The events should not be viewed in isolation, as similar incidents have also been identified in other federal states. The investigators classify the phenomenon as nationwide and see a possible connection between the threatening emails and the ongoing high school exams. Authorities stress that despite the threats, the safety of students and teachers is paramount and underline the importance of responsible communication about such incidents.
