The current development of the regional plan for wind power shows significant changes in the Schorndorf region. In total, three other priority areas have also been reduced in size, highlighting concerns about the impact of wind power projects on the environment. In particular, the location of a wind turbine in the RM 21 area, which is located in a landscape protection area with biotopes worthy of protection, has caused concern. This region is essential for water, climate and soil protection.
Public discussion and resistance
The decision to remove the priority area also reflects a larger trend in the discussion about wind power. In many parts of Germany, such as Bavaria, there is an ongoing conflict between supporters and opponents of wind power. While some communities vehemently protest against wind power projects, a majority of the population clearly supports renewable energy.
A ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court on April 29, 2021 underlined the need for intergenerational equity and demanded that the CO2 budget should not be burdened unilaterally by one generation.
