Hochdorf is blossoming: Seniors enjoy eating together and being creative!

The “Dorfwerken” initiative is very popular in Hochdorf. Nine volunteers are currently preparing a weekly lunch for seniors. This initiative aims to promote shared activities and thus counteract loneliness in old age. In particular, the Seniors at Talbach (SamT) working group had to be shut down due to the lack of young people and the age of the helpers. In response to this, the project “Quartier 2030 – Shaping aging together in Hochdorf” was launched, which is supported by the Esslingen district and the state.

The “Dorfwerken” concept was created in 2022 based on the wishes and needs of older citizens as part of a citizen participation process. It is aimed at seniors who are either already retired or about to retire and would like more time for shared activities. The aim of “Dorfwerke” is for seniors to design projects themselves and enjoy life in the community.

Diverse program for older citizens

The initiative offers a broad program that includes, among other things, painting, arts and crafts workshops, folklore dances, exhibitions and readings. Creative events, such as free painting and workshops, take place regularly in the former Peace Church. Seniors are encouraged to meet, start projects and discuss topics. In addition, in cooperation with the parishes, there is a senior lunch “Food and more…” in the Protestant community center, which is also very well received.

The weekly game afternoons, which take place in collaboration with the Skunk youth center, are particularly popular. These events bring seniors together with young people and families and promote exchange between generations. Table tennis and various games are offered as part of these meetings. Another highlight of the lunch table is the singing together after the meal, which is accompanied by Franz Keckeisen on the accordion.

Counteract isolation

Beate Schmid, who is active in the initiative, emphasizes how important personal contact is in the community. Isolation poses a serious health risk for older people, which is why offering lunch and other activities is so important. Interest in these offers is constantly growing, and there is also the opportunity for seniors to get involved and contribute their own ideas.

The third, revised edition of the “Guide for Senior Citizens” is available for additional information and announcements about future events. The dates are published both in the community gazette and on the initiative's homepage. An open ear for new ideas and initiatives is always welcome.

Further details about these valuable offers can be found on the websites Esslinger newspaper and Active in be read.
