Frankenstein in the open air: enthusiastic premiere in Esslingen!
The Württembergische Landesbühne Esslingen is performing Mary Shelley's classic “Frankenstein” outdoors in the Maille. The highly anticipated premiere took place on June 14, 2025. The next performances are scheduled for Friday, June 20th.
The play takes place in the summer of 1816 in a villa on Lake Geneva, where Lord Byron has invited his guests to a creative weekend. The weather at this time is remarkably cold and gloomy, characterized by rain. To pass the time, the guests try to play offensive games, enter into frivolous liaisons and tell horror stories that they have written themselves. In this historical setting, Victor Frankenstein, an aspiring doctor, begins to explore the secrets of creation.
The plot of “Frankenstein”
Frankenstein creates an artificial creature from corpse parts and breathes life into it. But when he sees the result of his work, he is horrified and rejects the creature. The creature, now on its own, tries to find its place in the strange world and swears revenge on its creator. This dramatic confrontation between creator and creature is the central theme of the play.
The narrative of “Frankenstein” is not only a captivating horror story, it also reflects the fears and curiosity of society at the time. In 1816, when the action takes place, Lord Byron encouraged his guests to write ghost stories, which led to the creation of Mary Shelley's famous novel. In addition to Shelley, John Polidori also wrote “The Vampyre” and Byron himself wrote the poem “Darkness” during this creative weekend.
