Two girls crossing the street at red light: Exciting accident in Leonberg!

On May 27, 2025, an unfortunate traffic accident occurred on Leonberger Straße in Leonberg, in which two girls aged 13 and 14 were slightly injured. The girls were crossing a pedestrian crossing when they allegedly entered the street when the light was red. An 18-year-old driver of an Opel, who wanted to turn left from Römerstrasse onto Leonberger Strasse, overlooked the approaching children and collided with them. Both were then taken to hospital; the resulting material damage amounts to around 2,000 euros, as Stuttgarter News reported.

The police have already started an investigation and are urgently looking for witnesses to the incident. A first aider who stood by the injured girls is particularly highlighted. She is described as 40 to 50 years old and wearing dark clothing. She was driving a dark SUV and could have important information about the accident. Witnesses are asked to contact the Leonberg police station on 07152/6050 or by email at leonberg.prev@polizei.bwl.de, as reported by Presseportal.

Safety risk for pedestrians

The incident sheds light on a general problem in road traffic. Pedestrians have a disproportionately high risk of being injured in traffic accidents. A basic study by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) shows that accidents occur particularly frequently among children and seniors. Studies show that distraction, such as cell phone use, can increase the risk of accidents. In addition, children often have difficulty developing adequate awareness of crossing situations, which could be improved through hazard anticipation training and more intensive traffic education (BAST).

Typically, 95% of pedestrian accidents occur on urban streets, with about half of these accidents occurring while crossing streets. Turns at intersections that are not signaled are particularly often the cause of such tragic incidents. In order to increase safety for pedestrians, structural measures to improve visibility should be intensified and tried and tested traffic regulations should be implemented.
