Dramatic accident: E-scooter driver succumbs to serious injuries!

A tragic traffic accident report shocks the region around Weil im Schönbuch. An 18-year-old e-scooter driver died in a clinic on Tuesday afternoon from the serious injuries she suffered in a train accident on Monday. The accident occurred around 2:15 p.m. at the level crossing with traffic lights and acoustic signals on the Schönbuchbahn between Weil im Schönbuch and Holzgerlingen, it was reported SZBZ.

The Württemberg Railway Company confirmed the equipment of the level crossing and emphasized that the police investigation is already underway. In order to clarify the exact course of the accident, the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office called in an expert. Details about the course of the tragic incident are therefore not yet fully known.

Increasing number of accidents with e-scooters

Destatis berichtet.

The most common causes of accidents are incorrect road use and driving under the influence of alcohol. What is particularly alarming is that 41.6% of the e-scooter riders involved in accidents were younger than 25 years old. It should also be noted that e-scooters were involved in 3.2% of the total 291,890 personal injury accidents, which represents an increase of 2.9% compared to the previous year.

Worrying statistics

Statistics show that 66.3% of accidents were caused by e-scooter riders themselves. Improper use of the road was the most common source of errors at 19.4%, followed by driving under the influence of alcohol at 15.1%. In urban areas, 60% of accidents occurred and 33.8% were so-called single-accident accidents. Furthermore, 3,930 accidents involving cars were registered, which accounted for 48.0% of injured e-scooter users.

Given these worrying statistics, it is clear that the issue of safety related to e-scooters is more urgent than ever. E-scooters have been permitted on the road in Germany since June 15, 2019 and are subject to insurance. Users must be at least 14 years old and adhere to the 0.5 alcohol limit.

The sad news about the fatal train accident underlines the need to further improve safety when using e-scooters and other means of transport and to take appropriate preventative measures.
