On Tuesday afternoon, alert residents discovered a wildfire in Ditzingen, on Münchinger Straße. Around 3 p.m., an area of around ten square meters of an embankment burned. The fire was initially contained thanks to the quick action of local residents who intervened with garden hoses. The Ditzingen volunteer fire department was alerted and took over the extinguishing work. Thanks to the quick intervention, it was possible to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring bushes.
The fire department was on site with two vehicles and ten emergency services. This incident represents the first wildfire in Ditzingen this summer and is a clear sign of the devastating effects of the high temperatures and persistent drought that are currently plaguing the region. According to krzbb.de, these conditions are directly related to the increase in fires in the area.
Wildfires in the region
Similar situations have also been noted elsewhere. For example, feuerwehr-euskirchen.de reported on a larger wildfire in which around 64 emergency services from the Euskirchen fire department and Zülpich fire department were active. This fire spread over an area of almost 31,000 m², which significantly increased the risk of further spread. Fortunately, it was prevented from spreading to a nearby forest.
The alarm for this incident was raised shortly after 12 p.m. Initially it was classified as a small wildfire, but the emergency management quickly found itself forced to raise the alarm in order to request more vehicles carrying water. Support measures also included the drone unit of the Hürth fire department, which contributed to better coordination of the firefighting efforts. With the support of a farmer who was cultivating the affected field and the provision of 16,000 liters of water by another farmer, the fire was quickly contained.
The challenges posed by wind shear and persistent drought encouraged the fire to spread, which is why the fire brigade had to respond with concentrated extinguishing attacks. Ultimately, the fire department was able to withdraw its measures around 2 p.m. after the danger had been averted.
These two incidents highlight the urgency and dangers of the region's ongoing drought and the associated risks of wildfires. Citizens are asked to be particularly careful and report possible sources of fire.
