750 years of the Mauritius Church in Sindlingen: A celebration of encounters!

On October 23, 2025, the Mauritius Church in Sindlingen celebrated its 750th anniversary. This important event was celebrated with a celebratory service organized by Pastor Michael Lang. In his sermon he emphasized the importance of churches as “holy places of encounter”. The Mauritius Church has established itself as an important place for the community; communion, baptisms, weddings and even gold weddings take place there regularly.

As part of the celebrations, a church café was also organized, which rounded off the ceremony. The church, which was first mentioned in documents in 1275, has a long history. The current structure dates from the 15th or 16th century, while the baroque interior ceiling was probably designed in the late 18th century at the suggestion of Franziska von Hohenheim. She was married to Duke Karl Eugen and donated valuable communion tools for the church, which are still used today.

Renovations and historical significance

The Mauritius Church has been renovated several times in the past. The first renovation took place in 1958, followed by extensive renovation between 1978 and 1979. During this renovation, among other things, five graves were discovered, but no longer contained any bones. The church has five gravestones in the interior, including an important grave epitaph of Baron Siegfried Ehrenreich von Bernerdin, who lived from 1720 to 1782. These gravestones tell of the history of the region and the influence of the families who lived here.

The community undertook the last comprehensive renovation a few years ago in order to preserve the cultural values and safety of the building structure. Historic churches in Germany are often faced with the challenge of preserving their buildings while at the same time meeting the requirements of today. Initiatives to secure these historic buildings are necessary to ensure their use for future generations, as demonstrated by various rehabilitation projects in other communities, including financial support from state and municipal institutions, which is often essential to realize these projects.

Outlook for future events

Further events are already planned in the Mauritius Church for the coming months. A Worship Night is on the program in November, followed by a lecture on November 2nd at 5 p.m. Historian Tilmann Marstaller will give a lecture on the anniversary on this day, in cooperation with the Jettingen Adult Education Center.

The Mauritius Church therefore remains not only an important place for religious ceremonies, but also a cultural meeting place for the community that reflects Sindlingen's complex history. Their preservation and the vitality of their use are a community goal that is promoted through such events.
