New senior mobile in Waldkirchen: ensuring mobility for seniors!

A new senior mobile home was recently launched in the Freyung-Grafenau district, which is specifically intended for older people. The introduction took place in the city of Waldkirchen, with the involvement of Margarete Aigner, who was largely responsible for an initiative by the district Caritas Association. Loud PNP Renate Cerny, the senior citizen representative for the city of Waldkirchen, acted together with the “Seniorenhilfe Lichtblick”, the Senior Citizens AG and the city of Waldkirchen to push the project forward. The initiative is intended in particular to increase the mobility and quality of life of seniors.

The senior mobile is presented as a new form of transport for older people that enables social participation. In the presentation, which officially took place in front of the town hall, Mayor Stefan Wagner emphasized his amazement at the positive developments, which are characterized by enthusiasm and teamwork. He highlighted how important such projects are for seniors in rural areas where mobility problems are unavoidable. He also praised Andrea Barth, Thurmansbang's neighborhood manager, for her contribution to the successful introduction of the pilot project.

Promotion of quality of life

The senior mobile not only serves as a means of transportation, but also plays a crucial role in assisting older people with medical appointments, shopping and participating in social activities. The senior mobile is supported by volunteer drivers who are willing to accompany seniors to their appointments and activities. The “Seniorenhilfe Lichtblick”, founded in 2003 by Lydia Staltner, aims to offer support to older people in need in Munich and the surrounding area. The foundation has launched a mobility project called “Mobility in Old Age” and finances cars for communities that organize transport services. There are currently eight cars in use and five additional requests are being processed to meet demand.

Considering that 80% of people affected by old-age poverty are women, the need for action is high, according to the Munich 2022 Poverty Report. Solutions to improve the quality of life of older people are therefore urgently needed. The senior mobile in Waldkirchen comes into play here and shows how important commitment and community projects are for improving the living conditions of older people.
