Serious accident near Deckenpfronn: 80-year-old traveling in the opposite lane!

On Monday, May 26, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred on the district road (1057) between Deckenpfronn and Wildberg-Gültlingen at 11:10 a.m. An 80-year-old BMW driver crossed into the opposite lane and collided sideways with a VW driven by a 64-year-old woman. The impact threw the VW into the adjacent grass verge. The BMW then collided almost head-on with a Nissan driven by a 59-year-old man. The 80-year-old driver sustained serious injuries in the accident, while the 64-year-old and 59-year-old suffered minor injuries. All three people involved were immediately taken to nearby hospitals by emergency services.

The material damage is estimated at around 70,000 euros, and the affected vehicles had to be towed away. The district road was partially closed during the accident investigation and clean-up work. Fire brigade and road maintenance crews were on site to ensure safety and restore traffic conditions. The work on site was completed around 2:50 p.m. so that traffic could then flow again. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, which indicates the complexity of what happened.

Frequency of accidents involving older road users

The course of the accident also arouses interest in the safety of older road users. Statistics show that older people (65 years and older) are less likely to be involved in traffic accidents than younger drivers. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 66,812 people aged 65 and over were involved in accidents with personal injury in 2021, which corresponds to 14.5% of all those involved in the accident. The lower proportion of accidents could be due to the fact that older people drive less often. Nevertheless, they suffer more serious consequences from accidents. Among people over 65 years of age, 24.8% of those involved in accidents were seriously injured, which is significantly higher compared to those under 65 years of age.

What is particularly noticeable is that in accidents involving older drivers, the main fault often lies with these drivers themselves. In traffic accidents, 68.2% of older drivers were primarily to blame. The typical causes of accidents include disregard for right-of-way and incorrect turning. These figures highlight the road traffic challenges faced by seniors and raise questions about road safety and prevention measures for this age group.

Another current example from Deckenpfronn shows the dangers that cyclists are exposed to. On March 6, 2025, a 27-year-old cyclist fell on the market square and sustained head injuries. Since he couldn't remember how the accident happened, the Ludwigsburg traffic police are looking for witnesses who can provide information. The cyclist was also taken to hospital. Questions remain regarding the circumstances of the accident, highlighting the complexity of road accidents in general.

Overall, these incidents highlight the urgent need for more measures to improve road safety, especially for vulnerable groups such as older drivers and cyclists.
